oooh! I was surfing around looking up info on the venerated cocktail bun and stumbled upon your site. I love this post, we have many Chinese bakeries here in San Francisco, but I don't think any of them make such a lovely looking bun as the Maxim with the swirls... what a fun bit of research!

Kristen: You're very kind to say so. It's definitely worth visiting a bakery in Chinatown and trying out a few different buns. They have both sweet and savoury buns so plenty of choice.

Swee: I hope you've received my email!

Thanh: Hmmmm, too buttery - is there such a thing? I have now added the Box Hill cocktail buns to the line up but would love to hear your comparisons.

I personally love the coconut buns from Carrington Cake Shop in Box Hill. The coconut filling is just delicious, without being overly rich like some other shops. The worse one I ever had was when the bread was so buttery, it was salty rather than sweet.

Helen: Glad you like them, AG! Yes it did do well and I really like the flavour of it. Great idea with heating them up.

LMM: It would be great if everyone else weighed in as well!

Thanks for the compliment but I think my photo-taking skills could do with lots of improvement. I'm working on it though and hoping that practice does make perfect.

Your photos are great. Yesterday I tried to take my first ever food photos, and they were so poor... I love the idea of the Melbourne to Sydney head-to-head. We need all the other states to get stuck in now.

Nice work! And fabulous photos!

The Montague Bleue one held up well considering it was purchased the day before. I like to warm day-old ones in the microwave for about 8 seconds.
